Knowing Bob - Item Three

This classic photo is entitled "Peeing in the Grand Canyon"!  It's a posed (promise) shot from a youth Mission trip to the Navaho Nation in New Mexico several years ago where we added a few fun days at the end and went to the Grand Canyon.  Matt, Paul, Daniel, Ben, Casey and I were just messing around but it always reminds me of the great guys that come up through Youth over the years. I keep in touch with some of these guys and others I just hear snippets about from parents or Facebook posts.

This is probably not the pic to put in a presentation to advertise for mission trips, but it is a fav by me.
There have been many trips with youth over the years, and I definitely believe in the need for students to leave their comfort zones and be challenged in their beliefs in new settings. That's a part of how they grow.

Knowing Bob - Item Two

Next top special item sitting on my desk it a picture of my kids.

This was from Easter a couple years back. You can tell because Daniel still has the "poof" hairstyle.  We were trying to get a nice picture and they kept messing around and I snapped this black and white shot and loved it.  This shows them in their normal goofiness and I love them for it.

With Daniel away at college we don't get the four together as much, but Daniel surprised us last night by stopping by for about five minutes on the way from Harrisonburg to VA Beach for a Young Life retreat and to see him hugging on his brothers made my week.

So here's to Daniel, Rachel, Nicholas and Patrick.

Knowing Bob - Item One

As I have not blogged in quite a while, I will start today the new and ever so exciting blog series entitled "Knowing Bob."

In "Knowing Bob", you will learn insights into me via the items on my desk.  Things you always wanted to know but were too scared to ask.  Things you will read about and then will always be scared to know me.

Here is the global view first:

And the item of the day?   A picture of Lisa and I.

Lisa and I have been married 21 years as of this past July 14th.   July 14 is Bastille Day (which marks the storming of the French fortress-prison) but don't get any ideas that I think of marriage as a prison.   Not at all.  Quite the opposite.   Being with Lisa has enabled me to widen my experiences.   I am a real introvert and if I followed my tendencies, I would probably usually be sitting at home.   Yet Lisa takes me along with her in life and I have learned to enjoy trying the new (as long as the new does not include food.)  Now, I sometimes even venture out alone!

In the picture, we are on a cruise somewhere (Bahamas maybe) and this is one of my favorite pictures of the two of us, thus it is sitting on my desk.  If you look carefully, you will see that my arm is around her but my fingers are pointing out.  If you glanced through pictures of us together for the first 2 decades of our marriage, you will see my hand up in quite a few of them.   The reason is that I get nervous when I get my picture taken and my hand just automatically pats Lisa's shoulder, therefore often giving me the flapping look.  In recent years, Lisa has taken to quietly yet fiercely whispering to me before the photo is snapped to keep my hands still!

A beautiful picture of a wonderful couple!  I love you Lisa!

Ending the day with Gregorian chants

About a month ago, Michael went to the Compline service at St.Stephen's Episcopal Church. You can read about his experience here. Last night, I met him and Peyton there to have my own encounter with God at the service. I had read his account but still wasn't sure exactly what to expect.

The following description is taken from St. Stephen's website: From the ancient monastic practice of ending the day in prayer and praise of God, a new weekly Compline service is held every Sunday night at 9:00 p.m. This stunningly beautiful candlelit service features a newly formed group of singers, "Sanctuary," offering Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony.

We entered the church and it was like stepping back in time to an old monastery, or how I envision one. It was utterly quiet with only candles at the front lighting what I call the cathedral. There were others there, quietly praying or contemplating, and we slipped quietly into a pew. Very soon, singers in the back began chanting hymns and for the next thirty minutes I closed my eyes and just listened and prayed. At the conclusion, I heard the singers walk out of the room and into the courtyard outside, the chanting slowly fading into the distance as they left.

I had never experienced anything like this before. It was surreal, and yet a beautiful way to end the day and begin the week.

A Happy tub is a Happy Bob

After years of product testing, I have finally decided on the best product in the entire world to clean soap scum....making your tubs and showers sparkle.  And that product is...Easy-Off Oven Cleaner Fume Free, in the blue can.   Now you may think this an odd choice, but it is by far the best product on the market for cleaning a bathtub, even though marketed for cleaning your oven.  Safe to use.   Doesn't damage your tub.  Doesn't stink up the bathroom.  It is a miracle product.

Now some of you may have a difference of opinion and think you have something better.  That's okay.  I am always cool with other people being wrong.  But trust Mr. Wright and his cleaning wisdom.   Once you try going the Easy-Off route, you never go back!

My kids

I truly love my kids and I enjoy things more when the entire family is together.  This summer, there have only been a handful of days when this has happened.   We have had weeks with no kids.  There have been weeks with just Rachel.  Or Rachel and Daniel.  Or just Nicholas and Patrick.  Or just Patrick, Nicholas and Daniel.  A multitude of kid combinations.

At the end of July, there came one weekend when everything aligned and we were all together for 2 days.  Nicholas and Patrick had been fishing for 2 weeks with Lisa's folks on the Eastern Shore.  Daniel finally made it home from being a camp counselor on one Friday night, so that Saturday morning Lisa, Rachel, Daniel and I traveled down to the Eastern Shore to spend the weekend with them.

Here are a few pics of my goofy kids together.  I wouldn't have it any other way.

Getting old - with a bang and a whimper

I got old last week.   I should have seen it coming a few weeks ago when I got my hair cut and the lady asked me if I wanted my eyebrows trimmed.  After a brief and awkward pause on my end, I replied, "Well...um...okay...if you think so."  That should have been the first clue.

Then, I went kayaking with my friend Michael a little over a week ago to camp on an island in the James River.  When I say kayaking, it was basically getting from the bank a little ways down the river to the island, and then back to shore the next morning.  So do not envision an elaborate, strenuous journey down the river.  It was just a short and simple trek.  No big deal.  Except two days later, my back hurt. And hurts even today.  That was a sign that something was amiss.

The thing that pull the nail in the coffin was that I decided to grow my beard back out.  I do it every so often.  But this time, when I looked in the mirror last week, I noticed what looked like a white hair. A trick of the light I thought and dismissed it.  The next day, there it was again, and it had brought friends.  Being the kind of guy I am, I went through three phases.  The first was that I obsessed over it for a day or so, staring at the mirror with my chin thrust out, turning back and forth, running my hand through the stubble, trying to convince myself it was indeed only the bright summer light beaming into my bathroom that was causing the phenomena.

The next phase, which I was in until this morning, was avoidance.   I pretended the white was not there.   When I looked in the mirror, I tried my best to only look at the top half of my face.  Yes, I fixed the hair, trimmed the..ummm...nose hairs,  then, well....errr...trimmed the ear hairs and oh my dear Father in Heaven as I type this I realize You have been giving me some other signs all along!!!!!!!!!  I have simply been too vain to notice them.

So today, the third phase must have kicked in.   Acceptance.  The back strain is there.   The hairs need plucking and trimming in multiple, absurd places.   And the white is coming out.   There I have said it.  I hope to some day move on to the next logical phase, which would be embracing the change; however, I know myself too well and will probably cycle back through the obsession and avoidance phases a few more times.  I can always shave the beard and make the problem go away.

So, I got old last week and it came in both with a bang (as in bang, "in your face", literally) and a whimper (the sounds I made as reality set it.)

"Walk as if your life depended on it, because someone's life does!"

"Walk as if your life depended on it, because someone's life does!"

2011 RICHMOND LIGHT THE NIGHT WALK

Thank you so much for your generous support in previous years. I have just celebrated five years as a cancer survivor since being diagnosed on May 11, 2006 with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, and many of you have walked this journey with me.

The Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual fundraising walk to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling cancer. Hundreds of thousands of participants raise funds for lifesaving research and patient services. It will be held in the Richmond, VA area on Saturday, 10/22/2011 starting at Albert Hill Middle School in Carytown. Money raised by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in events like this was directly responsible for the research used to create Gleevec, which is the cancer treatment I take daily.
This will be my 5th year supporting this walk, and I encourage you to help out my team "HE Lights the Night" in one of 5 ways:

1. Donate money to the cause (also check with your company about matching contributions). You can donate on our team site here.  Click the link on that page to make an online donation, or, if you want to send a check rather than donating online, please make out to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and send to my home address: 6110 Topping Lane Glen Allen, VA 23060.

2. Join my team via this site (A "Join Our Team Now" button is at the very bottom of the linked page) and help raise money for the Walk. Every dollar matters!

3. Simply show up and walk with my team on Saturday, 10/22/2011 starting at Albert Hill Middle School in Carytown, Richmond, VA. Click here to join the event on Facebook.

4. Volunteer at the Walk.

5. Pray for the success of the cause!!

Please join our team's effort today. Your participation in the Light The Night Walk will help save lives. Please continue to ask me about how the efforts are going or about others ways you can help. I would love to talk to you about it. Be sure to check our website frequently to see our progress, and again, thanks for your support!

Thank You!
